- Pollution is the introduction of harmful materials (pollutants) into the environment, damaging ecosystems and human health.
- Major types include air, water, soil, noise, and light pollution, largely driven by industrial waste, agricultural runoff, and, burning fossil fuels.
- Key impacts range from respiratory diseases to habitat loss.
Different types of pollution
Soil pollution
- soil
- contaminants, pollutants
- food security
- mining
- degradation - to degrade
- finite (adj.)
Air pollution
- exposure to air pollution
- particulate concentrations, particulate matter, toxic/fine particles
- soot, smoke, fog, smog
Water pollution
- throw-away society
- single-use plastic
- debris
- marine litter
- microplastic
- blood stream
- ocean food chain
Light pollution
- artificial (adj.)
- over-illumination
- billboards
- sky glow
- wildlife
- sleep deprivation
Noise pollution
- to be exposed to noise
- stressor
Recycling
Ex. 1: Watch the video and listen out for the following words and phrases.
landfill - incinerator - virgin materials - garbage bin - resource - dump - single-use disposable - sorting machine - compostable - wish-cycling
Ex. 2: Jot down all the words that contain -recycle-.
Ex. 3: List materials that can be recycled.
Ex. 4: What are advantages of recycling?

PRESENTATION PRACTICE
Situation:
As a volunteer with the WWF (World Wildlife Fund), you are extremely concerned about the staggering levels of pollution and their severe impact on ecosystems around the globe.
For this reason, you have started an information campaign in schools.
Today, you have been invited to a secondary school to raise awareness among students.
In your presentation, you should
- outline different types of pollution and talk about their causes and consequences
- examine how individuals and households contribute to overall pollution
- discuss the slogan 'reduce, reuse, recycle' and provide ideas on how to reduce household waste
For this infographic and more information on the topic, see
Useful vocabulary:
cloth bag - cardboard containers - landfill - non-recyclables - white goods: household/home appliances - compost bin - food scraps - single-use - to upcycle
KEY
Ex. 1: recyclable, recyclables, the recycling, recycling plant, recycling bin, recycling rates, to recycle/to get recycled
Ex. 2: metals, hard plastics, paper/cardboard, cartons, aluminum
Ex. 3:
-> materials are reinserted into a cycle of use: re-cycling
-> energy is saved because recycling lowers costs for the extraction of virgin materials
-> natural resources are preserved
-> materials can be sold = business opportunities
-> prevents pollution from mining
